The Aline Barnsdall residence, "Hollyhock House", was built on the 36-acre Olive Hill in Los Angeles between 1919 and 1922. The Hollyhock House was intended to be a poured concrete structure, but was changed to wood frame and hollow tile faced with stucco. The ornamental hollyhock details are made of cast stone --an early form of unreinforced pre-cast concrete.
Hollyhock House demonstrates Wright's reaction to the climate of Southern California. It is built on the top of a hill, basking in the hot California sunshine. Window openings onto the hill are recessed and few in number, while the openings into the patio court in the center of the house are full-length French doors leading to grass lawns, pools and fountains.
