OCCUPATION: "Puddler" (a worker who turns pig iron into wrought iron by puddling; an ironworker); early records show occupation as "boiler". May be same occupation. Probably worked in iron mills.

MARRIAGE: 1st marriage, Louisa (Unknown); 2nd wife, Isabella Reed; 3rd wife, Helena Hartlieb. Separated from Helena in 1898.

CENSUS: 1850 census lists John A. Culp, age 23, with wife Louisa, age 19, in Shaler Twp., Allegheny Co.; birthplace of both Culps is shown as Pennsylvania. John Culp's occupation is listed as "Boiler".

MILITARY: Served 2 enlistments during Civil War. 1st enlistment 27 May 1861, served as 1st Lieutenant Co. B, 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteers; honorably discharged 1 Nov 1861. 2nd enlistment 14 Apr 1865 in Allegheny Co., for 3 years, served as Sergeant Company I, 67th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania; honorably discharged 14 Jul 1865. Described in re-enlistment documents as being 5 feet 9 inches tall with hazel eyes, dark hair, and fair complexion. Re-enlistment documents indicate that John Culp is a resident of Shaler Twp., Allegheny Co. (also residing in Shaler Twp. for 1850 census) and that occupation is "Boiler". Received invalid soldier pension beginning 27 Feb 1892 for injury of spine and sternum (probably job-related injury, no evidence of injury related to military service). Pension at commencement of benefit was $6.00 per month; at time of death, benefit had increased to $22.50 per month.

CENSUS: 1880 census lists John A. Culp with wife Isabella, stepsons William and Frances Cougle, and daughter Anna A. at 3116 Wharton St., Phila., Pa. (26th Ward, 24th Div) Enumeration District 567 Pages 3-4. John's occupation is listed as "Pudler" and Isabella's is listed as "Keeping House." Isabella lists Ireland as place of birth for both parents; John lists "Spain" for both parents, but this may be an attempt at humor or a protest of the census-taker's questions... John's age appears to be shown as 50, however baptism record indicates he was born in 1828.

CENSUS: 1910 Census lists John A. Culp as a boarder at 326 Franklin St., Phila., Pa. Place of birth for both parents is shown as Pennsylvania. John's age is listed as 82. Occupation is listed as "Pensioner".

BURIAL: Fernwood Cemetery, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.; Section 42, Lot 52; "2nd from North Side 2nd"; plot owned by William H. Boyd, bears single marker: "Boyd"; individual graves are unmarked. John Culp's burial cost $107.50, for which his daughter Anna sought reimbursement from his pension.
