Hector Perrault and Jessie O'Neil

Joseph Toussaint Hector Emmanuel Perrault (Hector) was the father of Robert Perrault and the fourth child of Nazaire Perrault and Demerise Simoneau. He was born on September 11, 1896 in Montréal, Québec. Three elder siblings had been born in Boston, Massachusetts, but Nazaire and Demerise returned to Montréal before Hector's birth. In the late 1890's, the Perrault family returned to the United States and settled in New York City.

Apparently, Nazaire was unable to care for the younger Perrault children after the death of their mother in 1907, and some were placed in orphanages. Hector was placed in the Mt. Loretta Home on Staten Island. Nazaire may have returned with the children to Montréal before 1910, however, because no member of the family can be located in the 1910 U.S. Census.

Robert Perreault in Les Familles Perreault du Québec indicates that Hector married Grace Eva Bertrand, however, this event is unknown to current family members and unmentioned in family records. On November 29, 1917, at the age of 21, he married Jessie O'Neil in New York City.

Jessie O'Neil was born on December 29, 1897 in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire (now Cumbria County), England. Her parents were Edwin George O'Neil, a steelworks laborer, and Jemima Connolly. Edwin was also born in England, but his father, Peter O'Neil, was born in County Down, Ireland, and the family may have originated in Scotland. Jessie departed from Liverpool on the steamship City of New York and arrived at Ellis Island on July 31, 1916. According to the ship's manifest, Jessie traveled alone with $25 in her possession. She was described as being five foot four and one-half inches tall and having a fair complexion, light hair and grey eyes. Her sponsor was Mrs. Olley, an aunt, who resided at 298 Jay St., Brooklyn, New York. Jessie worked as a button holer in a textile factory, but it is not clear whether this was in England or New York.

Hector and Jessie are included in the 1920 U.S. Census as residents of Brooklyn, New York with their son Raymond who was then eighteen months old. Hector's occupation was listed as "millinery salesman." The 1930 U.S. Census shows them as residents of Dumont, Bergen County, New Jersey with their sons Raymond, now eleven years old, and Robert, seven years old. Again, Hector's occupation is listed as "millinery salesman." Besides their two sons, Hector and Jessie had a daughter, Yvonne, who was born in 1920 and died in 1921. In both the 1920 and 1930 census, Hector indicates that he immigrated to the United States in 1897. However, his younger brother Henry Honoré Hanuidas Perrault was born in Montréal in 1898, so the year of his immigration may be incorrect.

Jessie died on June 9, 1947 in New York City at the age of forty-nine. After Jessie's death, Hector married Margaret Louise Bailey of Winston-Salem, North Carolina on November 13, 1947. After retiring from millinery sales, Hector and Margaret moved to Winston-Salem. They later moved to Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida where Hector died on August 23, 1980 at the age of eighty-three.
